The Cahills are the most powerful family the world has ever known. However, the family is fractured, and the source of its power has been lost. The story begins with the death of matriarch Grace Cahill. In her will she leaves her heirs a choice: they can either receive a million dollars or a clue. The first Cahill to assemble all 39 clues hidden around the world will discover what makes the family so powerful - a reward beyond measure. It's Cahill versus Cahill in a race to the finish, with readers hot on the heels of the main characters, fourteen-year-old Amy Cahill and her eleven-year-old brother, Dan. The story spans 10 adrenaline-charged books, 350 game cards, and an online world allowing readers to play a part in the story and compete for more than $25,000 in prizes.
Cahill family members are shocked to discover that wealthy matriarch Grace Cahill’s will outlines an elaborate quest to decide who will become not only rich, but the new head of the powerful Cahill clan after her death. Those selected to participate in the quest must choose between the taking part and receiving the first of 39 clues or receiving $1 million dollars and giving up all other claims to the Cahill fortune.
Thus begins The 39 Clues adventure. Alliances and rivalries form and 14-year- old Amy and 11-year-old Dan, Grace’s grandchildren, find themselves caught up in a fierce competition between the competing family members.
The 39 Clues series will eventually include 10 books written by 10 different authors. There are currently three books available:
- #1 The Maze of Bones – Rick Riordan
- #2 One False Note – Gordon Jorman
- #3 The Sword Thief – Peter Lerangis
New books will be released periodically with the final book due for release in late 2010.
The 39 Clues competition is open in various countries worldwide with separate prize draws in each country. In addition to the books, clues and additional information can be found in 39 Clues card packs. Readers are invited to become honorary Cahill family members and join in the hunt for the 39 Clues. In Australia, total prizes worth $25,000 will be offered throughout the competition.
The 39 Clues website contains all the relevant competition details. Readers can register and keep track of their game cards in a virtual card collection online as well as finding even more background information. There are also games that can be played online using problem solving, logic and memory skills.
The 39 Clues books and website are a fascinating concept to get kids excited about reading and solving logic puzzles. Books and card packs can be found at booksellers and department stores. Mini-competitions will motivate kids to keep reading, looking for clues and visiting the website. Registration in the competition is open to children as young as 6 (in December 2008) in some countries, although even confident readers of this age may find the codes, clue hunting and other logic problems too complex.
Filled with action, intrigue, mystery and betrayal, The 39 Clues series is a great adventure and detective series sure to keep kids enthralled until the final clues are revealed.
