Fredrik Lotsie lives on Snowsmoke Island, where the only thing to eat is fish. Fish for breakfast, fish for lunch, fish for dinner. But Fredrik has a terrible secret. He's sick of fish! Fredrik comes up with a plan to fix his fishy problem. But while he's hard at work, everyone else just thinks he's gone bananas.

On Snowsmoke Island everyone eats fish for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but Fredrik doesn’t want to eat fish

anymore. Everyone thinks that he has gone bananas when he stops fishing and starts building a strange glass house on the ice. What could Fredrik be doing?

Thus begins the big discussion about whether Fredrik has gone bananas. I particularly like the small-town atmosphere of Snowsmoke Island. When Fredrik starts behaving oddly, everyone knows. His mother’s friends call around with fish stew to offer comfort and pick up the latest news about Fredrik’s project.

The various meals shown on the inside covers (fish at the front, bananas at the back) also offer some amusement. The fish and chips and banana cake pictures are okay, the fish tea, banana tea and fish chocolates maybe not so much.

This fun story is a great way to talk with children about trying new things, not giving in to peer pressure and finding creative solutions to problems and on the first reading, it is fun to get children to guess what Fredrik might be doing.
