Thank You, Random House

I was very excited to receive a box full of Vintage imprint books this week, a prize I won through an online Random House competition I entered recently.

Here they are:

Vintage Book Prize - Look at all those wonderful books!

For those who don’t want to squint to read the titles, this is a list of all the books included in the prize:

  • Beloved – Toni Morrison
  • Northanger Abbey – Jane Austen
  • Enduring Love – Ian McEwan
  • The Easter Parade – Richard Yates
  • Fly Away Peter – David Malouf
  • Disgrace – J M Coetzee
  • The Scarlet Letter – Nathanial Hawthorne
  • The Sea, The Sea – Iris Murdoch
  • Memoirs of a Geisha – Arthur Golden
  • Bleak House – Charles Dickens
  • Norwegian Wood – Haruki Murakami
  • Amsterdam – Ian McEwan
  • To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee
  • The Time Traveller’s Wife – Audrey Niffenegger
  • Midnight’s Children – Salman Rushdie
  • All Quiet on the Western Front – Erich Maria Remarque
  • Atonement – Ian McEwan
  • The Handmaid’s Tale – Margaret Atwood
  • Revolutionary Road – Richard Yates
  • Catch-22 – Joseph Heller
  • The Wind-up Bird Chronicle – Haruki Murakami
  • The Age of Innocence – Edith Wharton

The only problem now is finding time to read through this fantastic selection of titles.   There are quite a few books on this list that I have wanted to read for some time, so I am keen to get started.

Do you have any favourites listed above? Any suggestions about where I should start?

Looks like a fantastic collection! I’ve only read a handful of them, but I think I’ve loved each of the ones I’ve read – To Kill a Mockingbird, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Time Traveler’s Wife – all great!

    Wow, that’s just… wow.

Recommendations… Well, I’m personally a big fan of “All Quiet on the Western Front”. I’d also recommend “Disgrace” which I recently read. Then again, I don’t know if you’ve read Coetzee before and know of his very… interesting writing style. It can be strange at times. Hmm… I’ve read a few others on the list, some better than others but I’d recommend starting with “All Quiet on the Western Front”. It’s probably my favorite among all of these.

Regardless of what you pick, enjoy!

What a great collection. I have read 17 of these, if I’ve counted correctly. It’s hard to make a recommendation not knowing you reading preferences but one of the books that I list in my list of “little treasures” is Fly away Peter. One of the 5 I haven’t read, and that I really MUT remedy, is All quiet on the western front. These two, from what I know of All quiet, could make a good companion pair!

You’ve got quite a few 1001s there. I’d start with The Time Traveller’s Wife if you haven’t alread read it. It is a long read but worth it or alternatively The Scarlet Letter which I found very readable.
